The much-anticipated Driver’s Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) in Gansbaai officially opened its doors for Phase 1 in 2025 with a soft ceremonial opening, addressing the longstanding need for convenient licensing services in the Greater Gansbaai area.
Once fully operational, the centre will offer a range of services, including written learners’ licence exams, licence renewals, new licence and PDP applications, eye tests, and learner driver assessments.
Phase 1, starting on 14 January 2025, will focus on driver’s licence renewals only. During this phase, the Gansbaai Driver’s Licence Testing Centre will operate from 09:00 to 15:00, two days a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays), with a half-hour lunch break.
Future phases will include learner licences in Phase 2 and physical tests and driving assessments in Phase 3. The community will be kept informed as the rollout progresses. The Gansbaai Motor Vehicle and Registration (MVR) office will remain open, with operating hours unchanged throughout the week.
According to the Deputy Director of the Compliance Monitoring Unit at the Department of Mobility, Charlton Majiedt, having a licence is a key step in unlocking job opportunities and other possibilities. It not only opens doors but also improves one’s credibility and chances in the job market.”
Overstrand Ward 14 Councillor, Ald Riana de Coning, echoed the sentiment about the importance of having a driver’s licence, and said she is thrilled to have reached this stage and to officially open the Driving Licence Testing Centre. “The centre’s opening in Gansbaai will spare residents the hassle of traveling to Hermanus for licence renewals,” she said.
In closing, Overstrand Deputy Mayor and Mayco Member of Municipal Public Safety, Ald Lindile Ntsabo, thanked the staff for working behind the scenes, as well as all stakeholders, including local authorities and government agencies, for making the testing centre’s opening possible. “Your teamwork has resulted in a positive outcome for the community,” he stated.
